Activities & Things to do in Berlin 2024

What can you do in Berlin without money? A lot, we think. In the capital you will find countless leisure activities that are free . And we don't just mean a trip to the Brandenburg Gate. To help you plan your short trip, we have put together a hand-picked list of the best free things to do, tips and destinations in Berlin . A real city adventure awaits you that couldn't be more varied and interesting. Here are 10 activities that you can do to experience Berlin for free.

1. Tour of the Bundestag

Since 1990, the seat of government of the Federal Republic of Germany has been in Berlin Mitte. The parliament holds important plenary sessions in the Reichstag building, the results of which affect the lives of over 80 million German citizens. The Bundestag is open to every citizen and you too can visit the building, including the world-famous glass dome and the in-house museum, on your short trip. A simple online registration in advance is enough. Simply book a guided tour on the subject of politics, culture or history and find out more about the origins and functioning of our democracy as well as the Reichstag building itself.

2. Futurium Berlin

The Futurium at the main train station is unique among Berlin's museums. Its spectacularly designed, interactive exhibitions address the important question of how we as a society want to live in the future. In the field of tension between the topics of man, nature and technology, young and old can have a lot of fun on three floors. At the same time, living exhibits such as sponges and fungal cultures as recyclable replacements for leather and rubber encourage people to think and rethink. Want to join in? With the help of artificial intelligence, you can program your own song in just a few minutes, which you can download as an MP3 on site. Like many exhibitions in Berlin, the Futurium is free.

On the Futurium Berlin website you will find all information about the museum’s current exhibitions.

3. Berlin Wall

To visit the Berlin Wall, you simply need to follow the Wall Trail - a cobblestone marking on the streets of Berlin. The marking shows where the 161 km long wall used to run and ruthlessly separated East Berlin from West Berlin. Important sights on your exploration tour include Checkpoint Charlie and the East Side Gallery . At over 1.5 kilometers, the latter is the longest (and most beautiful) preserved section of the Berlin Wall, located in the immediate vicinity of the Spree and Oberbaum Bridge. The free Wall app also offers orientation, turning your sightseeing tour along the Wall into a 360-degree open-air museum with a city tour. No entry fee, no queuing, no stress.

4. Berlin Lakes

"Pack your swimming trunks, take your little sister and off you go to Wannsee!" The desire for refreshment in Berlin's lakes is present across generations - and costs nothing then or now. Reason enough to "pack your swimming trunks" on a hot summer day and spend a wonderful day at Wannsee, Schlachtensee or Nikolassee in the southwest of Berlin. The idyllic greenery allows you to take a deep breath in the otherwise scorching hot urban jungle with its scorching hot streets. Side note: This natural highlight in Berlin is of course free.

5. Free events and festivals in Berlin

Partying in Berlin is also free. There are many small and large free street festivals and concerts throughout the year. The two most colorful and intense are definitely the Myfest on May 1st and the Carnival of Cultures in Kreuzberg. Enjoy the capital in all its bloom and diversity alongside hundreds of thousands of happy partygoers.

More information:

For example, you can find out about all the events, concerts and festivals that are free on the Gratis in Berlin website. The Carnival of Cultures also has its own app for Android and iOS that shows you the order of the carnival floats as well as the most important stages and locations.

6. Tempelhofer Feld

Airplanes landed at Tempelhofer Feld until 2006. The reason: For decades it was one of the capital's three airports. Today, Berliners meet here to go for a walk , ride a bike , jog or have a nice picnic . The huge, partially green area between the districts of Kreuzberg, Tempelhof and Neukölln is a true oasis for those seeking relaxation. Hardly any other place in Berlin that is free and outdoors is more popular. What else is there here? A baseball field, a garden colony and dog parks. You as a tourist are of course just as welcome - really.

7th Lunch Concert of the Berlin Philharmonic

Every Tuesday at 1 p.m., high-ranking musicians give a one-hour concert in the foyer of the Berlin Philharmonic Hall free of charge. Just drop by and enjoy fantastic chamber music at a world-class level . As there is often a huge rush, it's best to get in line a little earlier to be among the 1,500 lucky spectators. We completely forgot to mention that this spectacle is - of course - free of charge.

8. Silent film at midnight

A very special attraction awaits you at the Babylon cinema . Every Saturday at exactly midnight a silent film is shown here. What's special is that the film is accompanied live by the only original cinema organ in Germany. Although you can only find such an instrument in museums and churches these days, it is all the more impressive when you are there in person. True to the motto "Zero o'clock - zero euro", you can experience this unique cinema spectacle in Berlin and travel back to the time of the Golden Twenties. You can view the film program in advance on the Babylon cinema website. Then on the night from Saturday to Sunday: silent film at midnight.

9. Park at Gleisdreieck

Berliners love their parks. Mauerpark and Tiergarten are green havens in an otherwise very dynamic city. Just a few years ago, a new park was completed around the railway tracks at Glasdreieck. Today, countless Berliners relax and exercise here. The park at Gleisdreieck is considered a model project for urban development and has transformed an industrial part of the city into a haven of peace for residents and visitors. Winning the German Landscape Architecture Prize in 2015 is just one indication of the progressiveness and popularity of this project. One of the most interesting free activities for outdoor fans - be sure to stop by!

In addition to Tempelhofer Feld, the Gleisdreieck Park is also under the care of Grün-Berlin. On their website you can find visitor information and insights into the history of this urban development project.

10. A bike tour through Berlin

A bike tour of Berlin is a great way to explore the city in a completely different way ! In fact, Berlin is a very bike-friendly city, with plenty of bike paths and bike streets that make it easier to get around the city safely and comfortably. A bike tour of Berlin could start at one of the many bike rental stations spread throughout the city. From there, you can ride along the famous Mauerrad of the former Berlin Wall Trail and experience the history of the city. Another great route goes through the Tiergarten, a large park in the heart of the city that is a popular destination for cyclists and joggers. Here you can take a break and enjoy the view of the many sights such as the Berlin Zoo, the Reichstag and the Brandenburg Gate. For the more adventurous, there is also a bike tour through alternative Kreuzberg . Here you can explore the streets and alleys of the area and experience the alternative flair that makes Kreuzberg one of the most creative and vibrant districts in Berlin. No matter which route you choose, a bike tour through Berlin is a great way to experience the city and move around freely and independently .
